Hey everyone, it’s Eduardo.

I’m writing this while sitting at my desk, surrounded by a stack of pre-calculus notes and my favorite pair of worn-out goalkeeper gloves. It’s a pretty good representation of my life right now. Most people see me on the field and think my only goal is to keep the ball out of the net. And don’t get me wrong: that is a huge part of who I am. But lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about the "student" part of being a student-athlete.

As I dive deeper into the world of elite goalkeeper recruitment, I’ve realized that my game plan for the future isn't just about the saves I make on the pitch. It’s about the moves I make in the classroom. I’ve decided that when I head off to college, I want to be a Business major with a minor in Finance.

Some people ask me, "Eduardo, why business? Why not sports management or kinesiology?" Those are great fields, but for me, business feels like home. It feels like the same game I’ve been playing since I first stepped into the box.

The Goal Box and the Boardroom

Being a goalkeeper is a lot like being a CEO or a financial analyst. Think about it. When I’m standing in that goal, I’m the last line of defense. I have to see the whole field, anticipate risks before they happen, and make split-second decisions that could change the entire outcome of the game.

In my finance classes, we talk about "risk management." In soccer, I call that "reading the striker." If I see a forward leaning a certain way, or I notice the defense is leaving a gap open on the left, I have to calculate the probability of where that ball is going. If I miscalculate, the "investment" (our clean sheet) is gone.

Leadership is another big one. As a keeper, I’m constantly talking. I’m telling my center-backs where to move, calling out marks, and keeping everyone organized. That’s exactly what a good business leader does. You have to communicate clearly, stay calm under pressure, and make sure everyone is working toward the same goal. When I’m looking at best soccer colleges for business majors, I’m looking for a place where I can sharpen both of these skills at the same time.

Why a College Soccer Business Major?

I’ve always been interested in how the world works: especially the money side of things. I like the idea of understanding markets, learning how to grow a company, and figuring out how to make smart financial decisions.

But there’s another reason. The world of sports is changing. We’re seeing more data, more analytics, and more big-money decisions being made every day. By pursuing a college soccer business major, I’m setting myself up to understand the industry from the inside out. Whether I’m negotiating my own contracts one day or managing a portfolio for a major firm, I want to have the tools to be successful.

I want to be more than just "the guy in the blue jersey." I want to be the guy who knows how to lead a team, whether that team is on a grass field or in a high-rise office.

Preparing for the 2011 Goalkeeper Soccer Recruiting Cycle

Being part of the 2011 goalkeeper soccer recruiting class is exciting, but it’s also a lot of work. The competition is tough. Every time I step onto the field, I know there are scouts looking at my footwork, my distribution, and my shot-stopping. But I also know they’re looking at my transcript.

Elite programs want players who are disciplined. If I can handle a heavy course load of business and finance classes while training every single day, it shows them that I have the "grit" they’re looking for. It shows I can manage my time and that I’m serious about my future.

I spend a lot of my weekends traveling for games, which means I’m often doing homework in the back of the car or in hotel lobbies. It isn't always easy, but honestly, the discipline I’ve learned from soccer helps me stay focused on my studies. When you’re used to training in the rain and pushing through 90-minute matches, a two-hour study session doesn't seem so bad.

Searching for the Perfect Fit

My goal is to find a university that offers the best of both worlds. I’m looking for top-tier soccer programs that compete at the highest level, but I’m also looking for a strong business curriculum.

When I’m researching schools, I look at:

1. The Business School Ranking: Does the university have a respected finance program?
2. The Goalkeeper Training: Is there a dedicated coach who can help me reach my full potential?
3. Internship Opportunities: Are there connections to the business world in that city?
4. Team Culture: Does the team value academics as much as they value winning?

It’s a lot to consider, but I’m not willing to compromise on either side. I’ve worked too hard on my game and my grades to settle for anything less than a perfect match.

My Strategy for the Future

Right now, my "strategy" is all about preparation.
On the field, that means extra sessions on my distribution and working on my explosiveness. Off the field, that means staying on top of my math and economics assignments. I’m learning how to balance the "short-term" (the next game, the next test) with the "long-term" (college recruitment and my future career).

I want to be a leader. I want to be the person people look to when the game is on the line, and the person they trust when a big decision needs to be made. Whether I’m diving for a ball in the bottom corner or analyzing a financial report, I want to give it 100%.

To all the other 2011 players out there: don't forget about the classroom. The skills we’re learning on the pitch are valuable, but when you combine them with a solid education, you become unstoppable.

Final Thoughts

This journey is just beginning. There’s still a lot of work to do, a lot of saves to make, and a lot of finance chapters to read. But I’m excited about it. I’m excited to show coaches that I’m a high-level recruit who brings more to the table than just my height and my hands.
